The Duel on the Downs, a confrontation at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday is now on.
Toronado (ridden by Richard Hughes) and Dawn Approach (ridden by Kevin Manning)have both been declared for the QIPCO Sussex Stakes on Wednesday this week at Goodwood Racecourse – this year’s ‘Duel on the Downs’.
The current tally is 2-0 to the Jim Bolger-trained Dawn Approach who won the 2,000 Guineas, coming home ahead of Richard Hannon’sToronado. He failed to handle the longer trip over 12 furlongs in the Derby, and had a hard-fought win at Royal Ascot.
Richard Hannon junior, whose father trains Toronado, said: “We were unlucky in the race at Ascot. I thought we came there to beat Dawn Approach but to his credit, Dawn Approach stayed on and beat us – he’s a hard horse to go past. We were unlucky earlier in the race but maybe at the line we weren’t.
“Our horse is a very good horse and we are going to take on Dawn Approach again. He didn’t run his race in the Guineas when he didn’t finish as he can. He definitely put that to bed at Ascot – his breathing was right and he is much more relaxed.
“He’s going very well now and is very relaxed in his work. Hughesie (Richard Hughes) has been in to ride him and thought the horse would run really well in the Sussex Stakes. We’re very pleased with Toronado and hope he runs a massive race.”
